The first loafers were made in Norway in the early 1930s. The first design originated from the moccasin shoes worn by Native Americans in North America and the straightforward slip-ons worn by fishermen in Norway. As word spread, orders for export were received from all over Europe and America. Even an article featuring pictures of Norwegian farmers wearing the shoe in cattle loafing sheds was published in the magazine Esquire. The USA's Spaulding family of New Hampshire soon started producing a shoe similar to this one, known as the Loafer. Subsequently, this name evolved into a general term for moccasin slip-on shoes. G. H. Bass created the first loafer in 1934 and dubbed it the Weejuns.
